How to Get Your Kids Interested in Sports or Physical Activities
Children should get at least one hour of physical activity a day. It’s an absolute minimum. When I was a kid we spent so much time running around outside it was never a matter of an hour, but these days with phones, TVs and iPads getting a kid to play outside can be a challenge.
So how do you get kids more active in their daily lives? Having raised 4 children myself, I can recommend some of my top tips.
Find out what really interests them
You may be a die-hard baseball fan and dream of your child becoming the next big star, but don’t let your projections define their future. They may go to baseball just to please you, but they won’t enjoy it if their true passion is tennis, for example. Never force your child to do something they really don’t want to do.
I encourage you to try all the different sports out there, even the ones that may seem strange to you. Listen to your child and pay attention to him, see what he reacts to best and encourage him positively to continue.
Don’t compare
I wouldn’t recommend comparing your child to another, “Billy is so good at basketball, he plays everyday, why can’t you be more like him?” It’s a pretty sure way to get your child to quit basketball altogether. Nobody likes to be criticized. Instead, why not find positive and uplifting ways to encourage your child to play sports.
Teach by being
It is not surprising that children look up to their parents. If you tell them “you need to exercise every day” but you don’t do it yourself, they might not be as inclined to listen to you. See if they can accompany you on your practices, whether it’s morning yoga on the beach or an evening bike ride. They will love spending time with you, and it will somehow feel more natural for them to be active if you are too.
You have a dog ?
If you have a dog at home, see if you can make your child the main dog walker in the house. Make him feel important by telling him that he’s “his” dog or that he does the job best. Half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening – a great way to get them moving.
If you don’t have a dog, encourage your child to walk or ride a bike everywhere. Not only is it better for the environment, something I’m passionate about, but it will also keep them fit.
Build a treehouse
If you have a garden in your house, why not build a treehouse? Kids love to do tricks, and when it’s done, they’ll stay active climbing it. If you can’t have a tree house, why not hang ropes from the thickest branches and encourage your children to climb them? You can even make a game out of it, like scavenger hunt, with one of the clues above this string.
do something different
Very few people enjoy routine, especially children who cannot sit still for very long. If you make them do ballet every day for 6 months, they might get bored and lose interest. However, if you change things up from time to time, they will never know what awaits them and will be excited for new adventures.
Maybe you could try new things every other weekend like surfing, rock climbing, treetop adventure park, trampoline, horseback riding – whatever you can think. Make it a fun day. Your kids will see new places and stay active in the process.
Fitness classes
Did you know that many gyms now offer classes for children? They are done in the form of a game, for example by jumping around obstacles. This allows children to have fun since they don’t see it as a chore and get in shape at the same time. Not only that, but if you go with them to do your own thing, you’ll teach them by example that going to the gym is a good thing to do.
