10 Facts On Aerobatics You Didn’t Know
Aerobatics is an extreme sport that is as exhilarating as it is liberating. The ability to fly at high speed and high altitude while performing incredible maneuvers is considered a great achievement, especially if you do it without a pilot’s license. Aerobatics has come a long way and its origins are as interesting as the sport itself. Here are some interesting facts and trivia about one of the best adventure sports out there.
1. The first recorded aerobatic performance dates back to 1904 by the Wright brothers when they performed the first aerobatic maneuver which was a 360 degree banked turn. They used a wing warping system to flex the entire wing to perform this aerobatic maneuver.
2. The first loop was performed by a Russian army lieutenant, Petr Nikolaevich Nesterov, on September 9, 1913. He was arrested for risking army property, but because of the death-defying stunt, he was later declared a hero and promoted to captain.
3. Low altitude aerobatics require more intense training and practice than high level aerobatics. A pilot’s ability to perform aerobatics at low altitude is first examined before they can be allowed to reduce the height at which they are allowed to fly their performance.
4. Sherila Johnson, 14, is the youngest pilot to fly in an aerobatic competition. She will remain the youngest since the age limit for the sport has been set at 17.
5. There have been no fatalities at an air show since the 1950s. Aerobatic safety rules are so strict, absolute and comprehensive that compliance is essential.
6. Henry Haigh Sr is the oldest pilot to win the World Aviation Championship at 64. To make this achievement more interesting, he won the championships using an aircraft built in the 1970s by his own hands.
7. The Roulettes are the aerobatic team of the Royal Australian Air Force. When not performing incredible maneuvers and aerobatic feats, the Roulette Team members are flight instructors at the Air Force Central Flying School.
8. The most famous aerobatic aircraft is the Pitts Special which was designed specifically for aerobatic flying. Built by a man named Curtis Pitts.
9. Lincoln Beachey is the “Father of Aerobatic Flight”.
10. Betty Skelton was the first woman to perform an aerobatic maneuver known as the “reverse ribbon cut” at the International Aerobatic Championship in 1949.
