First, you need to ask yourself some important questions. If you’re not asking yourself these questions now, you might be asking yourself the same questions a freshman is looking to find a college to transfer to. Don’t apply to a university just because your best friend applied there or it’s a prestigious school. Choose wisely. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

o Location – Where do I want to go to college? Do I want to get away from home or stay close to home? Big campus or small campus, city or small town?

o Type of institution – What type of university do I want to enroll in? Two-year community college or four-year institution.

o Housing – Where do I want to live? On campus, off campus, at home, in a single or double room?

o Registration – Do I want large classes or small classes? Am I comfortable in a student body of thousands or only hundreds?

o Student body – Do I want to go to a coeducational school or a single-sex college?

o Academics – Majors or course offerings. Does the college offer my major? Or if I don’t know what I want to major in, does the college have a strong liberal arts program that gives me plenty of subjects to study?

o Campus Life – Sports, intramural sports, clubs, orchestra, theatre. Are sports and recreational facilities available?

o Costs – Can my family afford the cost of college? What percentage of students receive financial aid? Does the college offer scholarships? Am I eligible for federal or state financial aid?

o Criteria – What criteria does the college use to make admissions decisions?

After compiling your list of schools that meet the criteria you selected, you can further narrow your list by ranking your list. Which colleges are your colleges to go to – (those you might struggle to get into) reasonably accessible colleges (those you have a reasonable chance of being accepted into and (3) safe colleges (those you know’ Make sure your list contains all three categories.
