Gym Etiquette – How Not to Be a Meat-Head
Be courteous. Polite. Concerned about others. These things seem like common sense in any type of work environment. What happens to people when they walk through the doors of a gym? It seems like all these things are thrown out the window. Most gyms have their own rules about this. But shouldn’t we, as fully functioning adults, have the common decency to conscientiously behave without the rules? What may seem obvious to some may not be to others. Believe me; I have seen them all. It’s time to make a change.
Wearing sneakers: Not sandals, not boots, not loafers, and certainly not the shoes you wore to work this morning. If you’re going to train, do yourself a favor and invest in a good pair of sneakers. Chuck Taylors are my favorite.
Appropriate clothing: You don’t have to cover yourself from head to toe, but please stop wearing those ridiculous spandex tank tops, t-shirts and shorts. Other people would like to train on the same equipment as you. It would be nice to have peace of mind knowing that I will not come into contact with something in which your flesh has just become intimately involved. On the other hand, if you’re training at a company, don’t train in the clothes you came to work in this morning. Seems a bit silly to me that someone bothers to hit the gym on their lunch break, but doesn’t have the good sense to bring shorts and a t-shirt. But don’t forget to wash them occasionally.
Ditch the aftershave: It’s a gym not a night club. Keep the sex panther at home. The need for fresh air in a gym environment is critical. The last thing you want to do is pollute the air of hard working people. The ladies will forgive you; I promise.
But wear deodorant: It’s the hardest conversation a gym owner has ever had. One of their clients has an extremely violent BO, and none of their passive aggressive attempts to let them know have worked. You feel. Everyone smells bad, especially when they work out. Do yourself and others a favor, and put in just a little. You can wash it right after if you don’t like it.
Wipe down machines: That big sweat print you just left on the incline bench? Get rid of it. I don’t care how you do it, just make sure it’s not them when it’s my turn to use the bench. I’m pretty sure that by law most gyms have to provide some sort of antibacterial spray for such causes. Find out where it is kept and use it.
Store weights and equipment: Put it back where you found it. I’m blown away by how many people go to the gym, the ultimate “I’m not lazy” thing to do, but they leave a trail of mess everywhere they go. Do you remember when you were little and your mother taught you to put away your toys? Use these skills.
Do not lose weight: Simple. If you have to drop them, they’re too heavy. Please, not everyone in the gym needs to know how much weight you just lifted. Alerting people to your strength by dropping weights on the floor is not an appropriate way to attract attention. It might work in the Congo jungle but not in the gym.
Respect the privacy of individuals: It may not seem like a private atmosphere, but many people just prefer to disconnect when at the gym. Learn the signs. If anyone is hesitant to respond to your conversation with normal social cues of interest, please just leave them alone. It’s not that they don’t like you. Some people just need to be left alone when working out. By the way, headphones usually correspond to “don’t talk to me”.
Ask before using: Be aware of the pieces of equipment people use. If I want to go drink water from the fountain it would be nice if I didn’t have to mark my territory before leaving. Along the same lines, don’t camp on a single piece of gear like a lion on a new kill. If you don’t use it, leave it.
Be a friend: Don’t be afraid to help people once in a while. Especially if they ask for it. Give a seat to a stranger. Hold doors where applicable. Help rearrange the weights. It will never hurt you to bother once in a while for someone who may just be an acquaintance.
It’s time for decent, civilized, well-mannered people to take over the gym. The Stone Age is about people. The gym can be ours now. The Meat Head is on the way out and it’s time he was retired for good.
