Parents – If You Love Your Kids Choose Not To Drink Alcohol

CHOOSE NOT TO DRINK ALCOHOL FOR THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF YOUR CHILDREN!

A SMART CHOICE! A WISDOM DECISION!

Why would a parent, who may like to drink alcohol, choose not to drink?

They know that tragic consequences can be in the future of their children, if they drink alcohol and their children follow their example.

Good parents refuse to encourage, permit, or model alcohol that could potentially kill their child. They know that a double standard does not work! Telling your child not to drink alcohol while you are drinking does not work! Responsible parents are aware that drunk driving, alcoholism, future drug use are only a small part of what can happen after a child has had their first drink. Parents who truly love their children are willing to give up something they can enjoy for the health and safety of their children.

I believe that mothers have the greatest responsibility towards their children in this area, because they set the tone of the house! For responsible parents, it is not a big sacrifice to make the choice not to drink alcohol.

A study was done on the brains of young people and the discovery was that young brains do not fully develop until the age of twenty-five. Young people need the adults in their lives to be good examples. They need parents to guide them and help them make good decisions. The sad reality is that many parents are bad examples and that when a young person discovers life, they follow the same path as their parents.

If you’re wondering about parental abstinence, think about it! How would you feel if your child died in an alcoholic stupor because he just wanted to be like you? If you don’t want them to drink alcohol, you must not drink yourself!!!!!!!

There is a movement that is gaining popularity today, similar to the anti-smoking campaign, which has been very successful. This movement is called “Reducing underage drinking”. It is the result of Congress’ request to the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine to review the evidence for various programs targeting underage drinking and recommend a strategy to reduce and prevent it.

The conclusion of the study is simple: alcohol consumption among young people is dangerous, not only because of the risks associated with acute impairment, but also because of the threat to their long-term development and well-being. .

I recently attended a national conference for this movement and was impressed by all the enthusiasm and excitement around teaching our young people not to drink alcohol, up to the age of twenty one years. Organizations from across the United States came together to share their knowledge and successes. Great strides have been made and young people are truly made aware of the dangers of alcohol consumption.

I am very grateful for all that is being done and commend everyone involved for their dedication and desire to save our young people.

Unfortunately, my only complaint is the lack of an abstinence message in their campaign. They don’t tell young people loud and clear that they have a choice not to drink alcohol at all, regardless of their age. They are not taught, “Abstinence is the best choice!” They only teach young people not to drink alcohol before the age of twenty-one. They must believe that something magical happens when they reach the age of twenty-one. If they just choose to drink, there will be no consequences.

Why do I believe abstinence is a better choice?

Still according to the study: 1/3 of the deaths of young people on the roads involve alcohol. Underage drinking is also associated with violence, suicide, academic failure and other problematic behaviors. All of these problems are amplified by the early onset of alcohol use among adolescents: the younger the drinker, the worse the problem becomes. In addition, excessive alcohol consumption common in young adolescents can lead to mild brain damage. A young person who begins to drink in adolescence is four times more likely to develop an alcohol dependence than one who waits until adulthood to consume alcohol. Nearly 14 million Americans abuse alcohol or have developed alcoholism.

My argument for encouraging parents to choose not to drink alcohol is personal, but is supported by the study. It indicates that the patterns and consequences of alcohol use among young people are closely linked to the extent and overall patterns of alcohol use in society, and are affected by the same factors that affect adult consumption patterns. From this point of view, it is possible that the most effective way to reduce the extent and the harmful consequences of alcohol consumption among young people is to reduce the extent and the consequences of alcohol consumption among adults. It is clear, however, that Congress wanted the committee to focus on youth drinking, rather than developing a strategy targeting adult drinking. That’s what the committee did.

The study can be read at http://www.national-academies.org (Reducing Underage Drinking)

The study recognizes that the best way to help our young people choose not to drink alcohol is to teach adults not to drink alcohol! It worked with tobacco and I believe it can also work with alcohol! Unfortunately, that is not yet their goal.

Why do I think parents should choose not to drink alcohol?

1. Modeling or example is the best teacher.

2. A double standard does not work.

3. Telling a child not to drink until age twenty-one is a temporary and potentially devastating solution that teaches them that it is okay to drink alcohol. What happens when they turn twenty-one and choose to drink and end up destroying their lives anyway? The first drink can be the beginning of alcoholism. Fifty percent of those who have alcoholics in their family can become alcoholics. It can also lead to a DUI, at any age, as well as all other violent crimes committed while people are drunk.

4. Why teaching our children to drink only in moderation is a bad choice! Because moderation teaches, “It’s OK to drink alcohol.” There is no safety in teaching moderation. The only safety is to teach abstinence. Also, if you’re trying to save your kids from the harm that alcohol can do, and you drink in moderation, you’re supporting the alcohol industry by giving them money for their products. Aren’t you allowing the alcohol industry to continue its mission to make money, so it can continue to destroy our children and our families?

There is also another common argument. It is believed; if children are taught to drink at home, they will be more responsible. This may be true in some cases, but in the European countries where it is done, the study reports that these countries are no better off than the United States in terms of the harmful consequences of alcohol consumption among young people. Plus, underage drinking is a crime and if you encourage your child to drink alcohol, you’re breaking the law!

Many churches have taught moderation and are now paying the price. They have alcohol problems in their congregations. Some of them have a campaign against alcohol themselves.

5. As parents, we should teach our children to naturally and fully utilize the abilities, gifts and talents with which they have been blessed and encourage them to achieve their life purpose and potential. How can they do this if they are using a temporary substance to manage their life or prevent growth? If they think they need a drink of alcohol to have fun, deal with a problem, or escape from a situation, they will never discover their own abilities. They will never develop the skills necessary to fully enjoy life. Children need to see adults living their lives to the fullest without the crutch of alcohol. They need to understand that life is fulfilling, enjoyable, and successful without alcohol.

We love our children and we want to provide them with a healthy lifestyle that they can enjoy for a lifetime. We want to do everything we can as parents; to ensure they have the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest. We want to keep them safe and healthy. ****Good parents set a good example for their children****

6. Mothers who drink alcohol during pregnancy can give birth to babies with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) or Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE). Children with FAS may exhibit mental retardation, facial and limb irregularities, heart defects, behavioral problems, shorter stature and lower birth weight.

In conclusion, choosing not to drink alcohol is a choice parents can make for the success and happiness of their children and for themselves. If our children are wasting their lives because they choose to drink alcohol, you can be sure your life will be wasted too!

Why am I saying this? None of us are immune to the ravages of alcohol abuse. Alcohol also affected my family. My grandfather and my father were alcoholics and each died at the age of 57 after having devastated our lives by getting drunk. When I was a teenager I started drinking alcohol, but fortunately chose to stop when I had children. My husband also quit. We weren’t alcoholics, but we realized that abstinence was a better choice for the sake of our children, and the results were wonderful. In our personal family, we don’t have tragic alcohol stories about our children.

Unfortunately, my extended family was not so lucky. Some relatives chose not to stop drinking alcohol, and others chose much too late. Some members of our younger generation are living the consequences of their stay in prison, are alcoholics and/or drug addicts.

None of us are guaranteed that our children will follow our good example. Each child receives the gift of choice, but we can be reassured, if they choose to take a negative path, we have not contributed to it and by our good example, we offer them a better path to return to. In the Bible it says: Teach a child the way he should go, and when he is old he will not deviate from it.

From personal experience, I can testify that choosing not to drink alcohol has had good consequences for my family. “It is in the house that we form our attitudes.” I encourage all parents to choose abstinence. It is one of the best gifts you will give to your children.
