Malcolm Heyhoe Previews November’s UK Horse Racing

Big isn’t always the best in the race, but when it comes to the Breeders’ Cup, which returns to Churchill Downs in Kentucky on November 4, the size of the prize on offer – nearly £10million in total – makes this quite simply the richest race meeting in the world.

There are eight high-profile contests at the racetrack made famous by the Kentucky Derby and this exciting series of events offers UK punters their premier opportunity of the year to bet on American races. Couple that with TV coverage of every minute of the action and you have the recipe for a must-see event. Luckily, Kentucky’s crisp, cool fall creates the right climate for European raiders, while the extra-long straights and tight turns also make it an inviting course for the European challenge.

For betting it is always prudent to focus on grass racing where European raiders are traditionally strong. This time the reverse is true in the Breeders’ Cup Mile where the American pair Aragorn and Gorella will be tough to beat. The latter arrives in the Mile in top form and is one of only four fillies to ever win a prize in the Mile after her gallant third against the boys at Belmont Park in 2005.

In the Filly & Mare Turf, all eyes this side of the Atlantic will be on the Ouija Board as she seeks to step back from a glowing career with a second straight win in the ten-stadium contest, but danger hovers in the guise of Todd Pletcher’s Wait A While, a filly at the top of this course. Along with Gorella, she is looking at one of the best bets on what is sure to be a must-see race night.

The Breeders Cup series takes place on the Saturday evening after the race at Windsor, which is the surprise venue for the traditional last big race of the Flat season in the form of the November Handicap. A complete overhaul of the crumbling Acres of Doncaster has meant moving the contest a mile and a half to the winding, twisting track on the Thames side and Brian Ellison’s tilt is one to watch here. Ellison snagged that precious award with Carte Diamond in 2004 and trained the rugged and versatile Tilt to do the same.

In Wincanton on the same day, the National Hunt race is flexing its muscles with three important races at the start of the season, starting with the Rising Stars Novices’ Chase which will likely be won by Natal trained by Paul Nicholls, an easy winner on his bow of hunt at Exeter the other day and one of the brightest hunting stars in the stable.

Later card bettors should pay close attention to the Badger Ales Trophy Handicap Chase which has yielded several Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup winners while the Elite Hurdle is an early scorer for aspiring Champion Hurdle horses and could see debuts season runners from Noble Request, seen by trainer Philip Hobbs as a better candidate for top hurdling honors than stablemate Detroit City, winner of last month’s Cesarewitch at Newmarket.

Jump racing is in full swing the following weekend with the marvelous three-day meeting of the Paddy Power Open at Cheltenham. It’s a great venue for bettors and racing fans and on opening day, November 10, I expect to see the much-loved Pepperoni Pete, an easy winner at Wincanton on his debut in hurdles the other day, landing the Anglo-Irish Bank Novices’ Obstacle for Paul Nicholls’ almighty team.

The main action of the Paddy Power weekend takes place on November 11 with the Paddy Power Gold Cup. First run in 1960, this two and a half mile handicap is the first big betting race of the jumps season and one that recently retired trainer Martin Pipe has made his own in recent years.

It will be interesting to see which horse(s) his son, David, sends for the grand prize, along with Celtic Son, a second season hunter who is said to be a potential candidate for the Pipe team. Traditionally, the winner of this valuable prize is a young horse, in his second season over jumps who has preferably won or placed at the previous Cheltenham Festival and who brings Reveillez perfectly into the picture. There will be few more plausible Paddy Power candidates than the progressive Gray of James Fanshawe.

On November 12, the third and final day of the Paddy Power Open meeting, novice hunters strut their stuff in the Independent Newspaper Novices’ Chase and again backers should pay close attention to any horse Paul Nicholls races in this course. Traditionally a stepping stone to a bid for the Arkle Trophy next March, this two-mile contest is a must for jumping enthusiasts.

The same goes for the Greatwood Hurdle over two miles on the same day. This handicap obstacle has become so intensely competitive over the past season that it has been a launching pad for the success of Champion Hurdle. This time around, Philip Hobbs intends to see if a Detroit City victory would allow him to follow the example of the stable’s other famous grey, Rooster Booster, who plundered that prize before successfully stringing together the Champion Hurdle the following March. Progressive Irish raider Cuan Na Grai also adds spice to the Greatwood mix.

On the weekend of November 17 and 18, high class jump racing will take place at a variety of meets, starting with the return of televised National Hunt racing at the realigned and remodeled Ascot. On Nov. 18, I expect to see Nick Gifford’s champion hurdle prospect Straw Bear begin his tough season with a success in the Blue Square Hurdle.

On Saturday November 18, Blue Square is sponsoring the eponymous Handicap Chase, worth over £50,000 and Harry’s Dream, a recent easy goalscorer at Kempton, has been nominated for the prize by manager Philip Hobbs as ‘it was at Haydock Park the immensely valuable Betfair Lancashire Chase is in its second year and could see Beef Or Salmon and last year’s winner Kingscliff face off once more while at Huntingdon Impek and Thisthatandtother could make their highly anticipated seasonal debut in the Peterborough Chase.

On November 19, the Becher Handicap Chase hits the headlines in Aintree and who can forget how the Royal Clan staged an impressive course over the forbidden Grand National fences to win this precious prize in 2004. His turn d The exhibition once again underscored that experience prior to this course is vitally important, while carrying less than eleven stone is another useful factor to weigh when looking for a likely winner. . Backers should also pay special attention to runners from the Sue Smith and Paul Nicholls yards.

The curtain falls on a wonderful month of racing in November with the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury on November 25. It’s one of my favorite betting races of the whole year and as always it’s worth remembering that this is a race for young horses, usually below eleven stone, although Trabolgan is be mocked at this trend when it went up twelve months ago.

This time around horses such as Copsale Lad, Idle Talk and State Of Play are expected to be front and center in the Hennessy image while on the same day in Newbury watch out for the Long Distance Hurdle which could see the World Hurdle competitor Mighty Man make his return to action. On the same day in Newcastle there is the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and on November 26 watch out for Denman and Over The Creek, two elite young hunters who may well be among the runners in the always informative Fulke Walwyn Novices’ Chase on the Berkshire website.
