When the balance board came out, it was hard to discern its value because Wii Fit wasn’t really a game. Maneuvering through the tracks while performing tricks is more challenging and fun if you use the balance board , which validates the potential of the technology. You can perform different types of tricks by shifting your weight between the different combinations of the front and back of your feet, such as distributing your weight completely over the front of your feet, over the back of your feet or by dividing it between your front and back feet. back feet. More advanced cheats that require more time to perform are available by also pressing the A, B or both buttons simultaneously. Secondary characters give you ability bonuses if you earn their respect by performing crazy tricks or collecting crowns scattered throughout races.
One of the main limiting factors of the game is that there is a very limited group of objectives. A few races simply require you to reach the bottom of a hill within a set amount of time or place first among a few competitors. Most races involve getting a set number of trick points as you glide through the course. Some races have a set number of items to collect before reaching the end of certain races.
The variety of tracks is also very limited. While most races are expected to involve sliding down the sides of mountains, there should still be more variety in obstacles and terrain. There are a few races that have branching paths, but these opportunities are nothing more than an extra jump to exploit. A few halfpipe tracks interrupt the rhythm of the game, but these are just single tracks that let you pull off a long series of amazing tricks. Road Trip should have taken inspiration from the over-the-top style of the SSX series, which is well known for its incredible grind rails, elaborate loops and multiple branching lanes in every stroke.
Multiplayer games involve very generic modes included in many other racing games. Cooperative mode allows up to 4 people to work together for the fastest times or the highest cumulative scores. The Hot Seat game allows you to switch between players and compete for the best time or score. Road Trip’s cartoon-style graphics are subpar even by Wii standards. The framerate is solid, but there’s very little texture variety to keep things interesting. The music tracks include a bit of variety from alternative, modern, and classic rock genres, but they certainly don’t pump through your high speakers to get you in the mood for setting trick point records.
If it weren’t for the game’s extensive use of the balance board, Road Trip would be a very mediocre game. A limited variety of tracks and tricks prevent the game from creating high replay value or challenging gameplay. Hopefully more games will take advantage of the balance board to make games more interesting, but don’t let the controls implementation stop the rest of the game from being fun.
