NFL Reviews Week 13
Philadelphia versus Houston. Michael Vic continued his push to MVP with another strong performance. The Eagles, with all their skill and speed on offense, held to 34 points with two more wasted touchdown passes and took a long half through the 3rd quarter, leaving the Texans back in the game. The bad news for the Eagles is that Vic was hit hard by a defense considered the weakest in the league. Vic is not the greatest quarterback in the league but he is stronger than he looks but, several times after being hit, he got up very slowly. The good news for him and the Eagles is that they have ten days to heal the bumps and bruises and for coach Andy Reid to find a way to lessen the punishment Vic is receiving. The Eagles badly need a healthy Vic for the stretch run.
The Texans also have an explosive offense but their defense has been their Achilles heel all season. This will be the reason why they won’t win the division. The Texans have Andre Johnson and he is now so feared that even angry Eagle fans were seen handing him pre-game cash to help pay for last week’s fine.
Pittsburgh over Baltimore. The Steelers won a tough and brutal game as advertised. It was like old school football where anything goes. Ben Roethlisberger just won the title of world’s toughest man by playing through a broken bone in his foot and breaking and twisting his beak early in the first quarter. Ouch! Not to mention he had to fight a bloodthirsty Terrell Suggs throughout the match. The Steelers overcame injuries, poor officiating (Ben was hit in the head and Miller was knocked out, personal fouls weren’t called), and the Ravens’ hard-hitting defense took control of the division. Troy Polamalu’s bag and tape was the turning point of the games. Polamalu’s ability to make these kinds of plays is unreal. The Ravens never saw it coming. Isaac Redman’s hold and breaking a tackle was huge too. The Steelers’ resolve kept them in the game until their big players made big plays.
The Raven missed a chance to take control of the division and earn an eventual first-round bye to the playoffs. They beat and bloodied Roethlisberger throughout the match. I’m not sure the Steelers would have ever scored a touchdown if Joe Flacco hadn’t fumbled after being hit by Polamalu. It’s easy to look back, but how did the Ravens not see Polamalu lurking at the line of scrimmage? It would have been so easy to switch to a racing game on the other side. It was second and five. There was no reason to pass in this situation. Flacco also armed the fourth and second pass. The receiver was wide open. You cannot miss these opportunities. I can’t fault Harbaugh’s decision not to attempt a 48-yard field goal in the swirling winds and cold. I can only fault the execution on the pass. Now the Ravens are more than likely on the road to the playoffs and it’s not going to be easy. The good news is that their defense will keep them in the road game.
Dallas is ahead of Indianapolis. The Cowboys won a game they would have lost earlier in the season. They made key plays when they had too and took a huge break when the Colts were penalized for using leverage on a drive late in the fourth. It gave the Cowboys the touchdown they needed. They controlled the clock with over two hundred yards on the ground led by Tashard Choice who got turnovers when they needed them. Jon Kitna was solid and didn’t return the ball. Even much-maligned kicker David Buehler received a clutch kick in overtime.
The Colts really need this game and didn’t get it. Falling behind 17-0 is never good. The Colts don’t have a running game and Peyton Manning’s four interceptions cost them the game again. Manning presses and his footwork is terrible. He often gets rid of his tiptoes and does not see all the ground. He also makes bad decisions. Even with Manning’s error-prone play, the Colts still had a chance to win. The leverage penalty on a field goal attempt was just as significant as Manning’s four interceptions. The Colts now face an uphill battle just to sneak into the playoffs.
Chicago over Detroit. The Bears just find a way to win close games. It’s just their year. The Lions just find a way to lose close games. It is not their century.
Green Bay over San Francisco. The Packers won a game in the ugliest uniforms in NFL history. They must be burned immediately. The 49ers haven’t beaten a team in cold weather since Joe Montana was quarterback.
Kansas City over Denver. The Chiefs were almost caught staring ahead but escaped with a win. The Broncos have now proven they can lose boredom too.
Atlanta over Tampa Bay. The Falcons and Matt Ryan rally to win another close game. The Buccaneers had this game under control until their old-school orange jerseys caused 11 players to miss tackles on a kickoff return for a Falcons touchdown.
New Orleans borders Cincinnati. The Saints are so explosive on offense but they needed the Bengals to fall for the never-before-seen. The trick “Pull you out of the game with a hard number of snaps”.
The New York Giants beat Washington. The Giants did what they wanted on offense and defense. The Redskins were incompetent in every way except showing up on time.
Minnesota blasting Buffalo. The Vikings proved they could win without Brett Farve. But Farve was there in spirit for Tarvaris Jackson to throw interceptions as well. The Bills finally had a non-heartbreaking loss and seemed relieved in the process.
Cleveland borders Miami. The Browns have now won two straight since the first time this season. Too bad it’s not the victory over Miami that the city of Cleveland really wanted. The Dolphins are now heading into the always dreaded five hundred season.
Oakland over San Diego. The Raiders beat won a game many thought was impossible since the Chargers haven’t lost in December since 2005. The Chargers had to spend the week checking out the real estate market in Los Angeles.
Seattle over Carolina. The Seahawks victory allowed the Seahawks to keep their goal of a bowl berth intact. The Panthers are hoping the season ends today in order to have the first draft pick.
St. Louis upon Arizona. The Rams finally snapped a losing streak against the Cardinals. Coach Cardinal Whisenhunt discovers it’s hard to win when your quarterback is Kurt Warner
