Beanie Baby Trading Cards Are The Lost Collectible From An Age Of Popularity
Beanie Baby Dolls
Beanie Babies began production in 1993 and went into full production in 1994. They had no real popularity until the second half of 1995. In 1996 “miniature beanies came out with McDonald’s Happy Meals. Everyone, even mom and dad, had them.Their popularity grew to the point that even immigrants inside the United States peddled Beanie Babies at swap meets.At the start of the craze, they were sold 10 times more expensive than in retail stores.
Beanie Babies from 1996 to 1999 were bought by collectors for resale and it got to the point where they were no longer a prized possession to make a good return on investment. On December 31, 1999, Ty had to stop production due to its oversaturation on the second-hand market. No one wanted it anymore. At the height of their popularity, 10% of eBay sales were Beanie Babies.
January 2, 2000 Ty resumed production of Beanie Babies two days after shutting down production. Some say the restart was due to demand and others say the restart was due to an economic strategy by Ty. I can safely say that the used market was flooded with Beanie Babies to the point that they couldn’t be given away, “even if you begged someone to take them”. Ty restarted production on January 2, 2000, two days after production ceased, was in limited quantities so people couldn’t put them up for sale the same day they bought them and saturate the market with opportunity to the point of collapsing.
Beanie Baby Community Cards
* 1st Edition, Series November 1, 1998
* 1st Edition, Series March 2, 1999
* 2nd Edition, Series July 3, 1999
* 2nd Edition, Series November 4, 1999
The Beanie Baby cards did not appear until November 1998 and died upon their arrival until early 1999 when it was announced that the cards were being retired. After the cards were removed, the remaining inventory sold out quickly. After their retirement announcement, which led to a quick sell-out, Ty released the Series 2 cards in March 1999.
Edition 1 of Series 1 of Beanie Babies Cards had 504,000 boxes produced in early November 1998 and the cards weren’t that great. They were just images superimposed on images that were old technology. By 1994, the sports card industry was producing trading cards that went beyond just the design produced by Ty. Guess that’s why Ty Trading Cards died on the shelf until of course they were removed.
594,000 Series 2 1st Edition boxes were produced and launched in March 1999 and sold before reaching retail shelves. Cards that reached retail shelves had higher purchase limits and prices. The series 1 1st edition cards were poorly designed for cheap and have no appeal and you can see in the 1st edition series 2 cards the same poor design quality was retained due to the popularity of physical dolls.
In July 1999, the 2nd edition of the Series 3 cards was released. 751,332 boxes were released. Graphics have been updated and more pleasing to the eye. This series of cards are very pleasing to the eye and will most likely be a more desirable card for the average collector. If you’re looking for design quality, the 2nd Edition Series 3 cards are where you want to be. Backgrounds are not so blurry and text is underlined in 3D. Series 1 and 2 are a big disappointment in the design technology produced in sports and comic cards in the latter half of the 1990s.
November 1999 saw the final release of Beanie Baby Trading Cards. The 2nd edition of Series 4 released 620,000 boxes of cards to the public. These cards continued with the same design quality as the 2nd Edition Series 3 cards. As noted above, in December 1999, Ty announced the end of Beanie Baby dolls and, with that, the end of cards. Even though Ty produced limited quantities of Beanie Babies in January 2000, the cards to date have never returned.
Beanie Baby cards can still be had for $1.00 to $5.00 each on eBay, Ecrater, and other card marketplaces depending on the seller. These cards are highly undervalued due to the lack of desirability caused by the overproduction of Beanie Baby dolls. At the time of this article, going to eBay to find these cards will yield very few results for each individual card searched. You would expect to find hundreds and hundreds of these cards on eBay from various sellers, but that’s just not the case. Either people have given up trying to sell the cards they have, or they just don’t have any to sell?
These cards, all series combined, were only produced for 1 year. November 1998 to November 1999 is it for all past and present Beanie Babies animals. Sports cards, comic cards can have each player or character produced every year for many years. This is not the case for Beanie Babies. These cards are a one year only production collection of an extremely popular Ty product. There are many small collectible card sets on the second hand market which were only produced once and due to lack of popularity are not played.
Will these Beanie Baby cards ever reach the popularity of the dolls that made the cards possible? If I had to speculate on that, I’d say that these cards will one day approach the popularity of dolls. Will this happen in my lifetime? As with any collectible, this question cannot be answered. Popularity is something that occurs through each person’s thought multiplied by many. The only realistic thought that can be made is based on past popularity collectibles that have gained popularity today and that someday in the future will recognize these collectibles as an image of a past popular item which will bring value to the cards when they are recognized.
